…and all taxpayers take a big sigh of relief!
Whether you file your own taxes or have them prepared, whether you have to pay or you are getting money back, there’s no doubt that we are all happy once April 15th ends. Money is definitely on the brain this time of the year. For that reason, it is a good time to review your tax return and implement changes that can affect your taxes for next year.
Self-Prepared Tax Filers
If you prepared your own taxes let me say, “Good for you! I am proud of you!” By doing so you already have a better understanding of your income and tax obligations. Just the fact that you typed in the numbers from all the different forms, you are more in tune with your overall financial life. As you are working through the software, you probably noticed the questions the software asked you. Tax software is intuitive and knows what deductions and tax credits you may be eligible for. Now that your return has been filed, take a few extra minutes to go back and see what suggestions were made for next year. Even though I have done my taxes and those of others for many years, I have been able to save even more by taking those few extra minutes to see what suggestions the software offers.
Professionally Prepared-Filers
If you had your taxes filed by a professional tax preparer or CPA, no worries, I am proud of you, too! You know that taxes are important, and you want that added confidence that they are done correctly. I completely support that idea! Before too much time passes, review your return. Contact your tax preparer and ask if they noticed anything that you could do differently next year that could reduce your tax obligation or increase your refund.
